She's Out Of My League (DVD)

The rom-com formula of the "beautiful woman falling for the lovable average Joe" has been done to death over the years. So while this new re-telling of the story may not seem too original, it does manage to tick all the required boxes with sweetness, charm and some hilariously raunchy humour.

Born-to-play-a-loser Jay Baruchel has the perfect face and build for the role of Kirk, an airport security guard who meets the gorgeous Molly as she checks in for a flight. She misplaces her cellphone and Kirk is the one who makes sure to return it to her. From here on in, Molly decides to be friendly and show her gratitude and over time they both develop feelings for each other, much to the shock and dismay of their respective social groups.

And this is the major plot point of the film: seeing how Kirk and Molly have to deal with their families and friends both not putting much substance in their relationship, and the sometimes-excruciatingly funny scenes of embarrassment when people don't at first realize they're a couple. The performances are all excellent, with Baruchel being quite adept at playing this kind of role. Alice Eve as Molly is of course gorgeous, as required, but yet she also manages to show some surprising depth showing that Molly is not just a "dumb blonde".

The only time the movie seems to fall flat is maybe the final 10 minutes, but up until that point, it's definitely a winning rom-com, with a talented supporting cast also one of the main reasons for the film's success. Sweet and funny! (4 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)

Kirk, an average Joe, can’t believe his luck. Though he’s stuck in a seemingly dead-end job as an airport security agent, against all odds, Molly, a successful and outrageously gorgeous babe, falls for him.

Kirk is stunned. So are his friends, his family and even his ex-girlfriend.

Now he has to figure out how to make the relationship work, even though he’d be the first to admit she’s totally out of his league.
