The cantankerous Rooster Cogburn is hired by a headstrong young girl (Kim Darby) to find the man who murdered her father and fled with the family savings. When Cogburn's employer insists on accompanying the old gunfighter, sparks fly.

And the situation goes from troubled to disastrous when an inexperienced Texas Ranger (Glen Campbell) joins the party. Laughter and tears punctuate the wild action in this extraordinary Western which also features performances by Robert Duvall and Strother Martin.

John Wayne earned the 1969 Best Actor Academy Award for this larger-than-life performance as the drunken, uncouth and totally fearless one-eyed U.S. Marshall, Rooster Cogburn.

True Grit (original 1963 version)

Tue, 8 Oct 2013 | Review by: Micky B

Thisone is the real thing! Veteran Westerner John Wayne won his only Oscar here for “Best Actor;” and he heads up a strong Western cast that includes Kim Darby, Glen Cambell, Jeremy Slate, Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, and Strother Martin. Story: kindly rancher Frank Ross (John Pickard) is gunned down by his drunken hired hand, Tom Chaney (Jeff Corey,) and Ross’ 14-year-old daughter Mattie (Kim Darby) dedicates herself to avenging her father’s murder. She hires the aging U.S. Marshal Reuben "Rooster" J. Cogburn (John Wayne;) having heard that despite his vices and missing eye, Cogburn has "true grit". She gives Rooster a down payment to track down Chaney, who has taken up with "Lucky" Ned Pepper (Robert Duvall), a gang leader whom Rooster once shot in a gunfight. They are joined by a young Texas Ranger, La Boeuf (Glen Campbell), who hopes to collect a $1,500 reward for capturing Chaney, much more than Mattie is offering Cogburn. The ranger says Chaney also killed a Texas state senator named Bibbs, and Bibbs' dog. La Boeuf is reluctant to allow Mattie to accompany them, but Cogburn turns a blind eye (no pun intended!) to the young girl’s tagging along. Many adventures befall the trio as they travel into Indian territory, and Mattie ultimately ensures that justice is done! It’s a” purty durn good” Western, with some of the best outdoor photography turned out by Paramount since the same studio’s Shane back in the 1950s. The background musical score is up to Elmer Bernstein’s usual standard of perfection.
