Falling pregnant as a teenager in 1952, Philomena Lee was sent to a convent to be looked after as a "fallen woman".

When only a toddler, her baby was put up for adoption by nuns and whisked away to America and Philomena spent the next fifty years searching in vain until she met Martin Sixsmith, a journalist as cynical as Philomena was trusting.

Together they set off on a hilarious and uplifting journey that would change their lives forever.
