Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts head up the cast in this superior political thriller, of the type that the American movie makers excel.
Three senior US judges of diversified political affiliations are independently assassinated. A young second-year law student, Darby Shaw (Julia Roberts), theorizes that there may be some similarity in their otherwise-different voting patterns that may provide a motive for their assassinations, and she decides to research the two senior justices' records and cases.
Meanwhile, in Washington DC, political reporter Gray Grantham (Denzel Washington) is contacted by an anonymous informant who calls himself "Garcia" and claims to have information about the assassinations which he had apparently seen inadvertently at his place of employment. And the storyline really gets into gear from here.
Personally, I find that in view of the plot, it is ironical that Derby Shaw has a classmate by the name of Alice... whose real name is Cynthia Nixon!! Or was that was purely intentional?
Also in the cast are Robert Culp (as The President); John Lithgow; Sam Shepard; veteran actor Hume Croyn, and Jack Webber (as "Garcia"). The acting - particularly from the two leads - is of the highest calibre, and James Horner contributes a very good musocal score indeed.
An excellent picture all round.
Two Supreme Court justices have been murdered and a lone law student (Roberts) turns her suspicions about the deaths into a speculative brief that sends shock waves into the highest levels of government.
She and a determined investigative reporter (Washington) want to tell the world what they have uncovered - if they live to tell it. The race is on and these two are more than runners. They're moving targets.
