This has to be one of the funniest movies I've seen in the past few years. It's very raunchy and has quite a few naughty scenes, but it's heart is in the right place as it's also one of the most realistic romantic comedies I've seen, and quite poignant to boot. Think American Pie
meets The Break-Up
Newcomer Seth Rogen (who has a big comedy future ahead of him) plays Ben Stone, a 30 year old unemployed slacker who's content to drift through life. Katherine Heigl plays Allison Scott, a reporter for E! Entertainment Network whose career is on the up and up. While celebrating a recent promotion at a nightclub, Allison meets Ben, and with the help of copious amounts of alcohol they hit it off, go back to her place and have a one night stand. Two months later Allison finds out she's pregnant, and this is where the soul of the movie really starts to show, as Allison and Ben now have to get to know each other and deal with impending parenthood.
What makes the movie work are the characters, and for that a lot of the credit must go to the actors who manage to make us laugh one minute, and yet in the next manage to make us sympathise with their dilemmas. The stand-outs are Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann who play a bored married couple, and with the fizz gone out of their relationship, they individually make sometimes hysterical and sometimes heart-wrenching attempts to hold onto their youth and not face adulthood in suburbia.
In essence, the movie is trying to tell us that at some point we all have to grow up and face responsibilities in life. And it conveys this message with a definite sense of realism. You'll feel as if you know people like this, especially the three guys who play Ben's slacker buddies. A lot of the belly laughs come from these guys just sitting and talking the biggest load of nonsense under the sun. But in these misfits you also see men still trying to be boys and hold onto something that we all know is fading away.
All in all, I highly recommend this movie. Extremely funny, but not too silly that it would be off-putting to girls. Very romantic, but not too syrupy to chase away the guys. A perfect couples movie. (4 out of 5 By Carlisle Johnson)
For fun loving party animal Ben Stone, the last thing he ever expected was for his one night stand to show up on his doorstep eight weeks later to tell him she's pregnant.
