High School Musical - Encore Edition (DVD)

In two words: see it! There are not many movies – even musicals – where the ending is a happy one for everybody; even the people you formerly deemed to be bad guys.

It’s a sort of high school musical Romeo and Juliet story. Macho basketball team captain Troy Bolton (Zac Efron), and egghead “Einsteinette” Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Anne Hudgens) are mocked by their respective groups of schoolmates for wanting to sing at the school concert! Zac’s task is not made easier by the fact his father is the school’s basketball coach! In order to keep them focused on what the others feel is of maximum importance to them: strings are pulled so the concert tryouts are re-scheduled to take place at the same time as Troy’s important basketball final, and Gabrielle’s big inter-college scholastic decathlon event! But where there are two determined wills…

It’s very much a “fun” movie. The musical numbers are bright, breezy and professionally done: the choreography impeccable, and the lyrics very clever indeed; often funny as well.

And in the song “Stick to the Status Quo,” it is revealed that many of the other students also have hidden ambitions to achieve in life…

Zac Efron and Vanessa Anne Hudgens star in this Disney Channel Original Movie as popular basketball team captain Troy and smart, stunning academic Gabriella. Both shock the members of the social cliques to which they belong when they each decide to audition for the high school's musical. By proving themselves to be brilliant performers, can these two teens lead their peers towards more open-minded thinking and acceptance of one another?
