The Twilight series has a devoted following, mostly amongst females, and it's easy to see why: loads of well-built guys, one lone major female character in-between them, and rounded off with a mix that contains tons of teenage romantic angst as well as supernatural vampire vs. werewolf mythos.

It's based on the hit collection of novels from author Stephenie Meyer, so will it appeal to normal guys or even anybody who hasn't read the books? Personally, this second installment expands immediately on the events in the first movie. Bella and Edward are together, but not happily tho. Bella is having nightmares about growing old mortally with a guy who's already 109 years old, and Edward is starting to realize how dangerous it is for Bella to be around him and his family.

This leads to Edward deciding to leave, and a traumatized Bella is heartbroken (and with the excessive and suprising pain this 18-year-old girl seems be feeling, it seems it's true when they say: "there's nothing quite like your first love"). And with Edward out of the picture, her old friend Jacob comes to her aid, mentally and physically. Of course, Jacob is hiding a secret, and it's one that will determine the fate of their friendship and somewhat-burgeoning romance.

To reveal any more of the plot would be insipid, but this movie IS over 2 hours long, so there are some surprises at least in the storyline. And though the first half is kind of overly-sentimental and broody, the pace definitely picks up in the second hour. There's an exciting climax that involves young Dakota Fanning and Michael Sheen as the Volturi that will keep you interested in future plot developments, not to mention the movie ends on a dialogue conversation cliffhanger of note.

As for the main performances, I've always admired Kristen Stewart as a good actress, after good turns in Panic Room and Adventureland, so she manages to easily pull off the role of Bella with aplomb. Pattinson as Edward Cullen also manages a decent turn. Lautner however is not as successful, but that could also be due to some of the generally corny dialogue his character Jacob gets to sprout.

All in all, this tale mainly focusses on the relationship between Jacob and Bella, as Edward is missing for about three-quarters of the film. But it manages to keep one's interest. And I have it on good authority that the next chapter, Eclipse, manages to be even more exciting and has a much better story to tell. So, in essence, New Moon is nothing fantastic, but there's definite potential in this saga to improve in further installments. (3 outof 5, by Carlisle Johnson)

In the second chapter of Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling Twilight series, the romance between mortal Bella Swan and vampire Edward Cullen grows more intense as ancient secrets threaten to destroy them.

When Edward leaves in order to keep Bella safe, she tests fate in increasingly reckless ways in order to glimpse her love once more.

But when she’s saved from the brink by her friend, Jacob Black, Bella will uncover mysteries of the supernatural world that will put her in more peril than ever before.
