The Closer - Season 2 (DVD, Boxed set)

The second season of this critically-acclaimed crime series manages to be even better than the first, with everybody involved being more at-ease with their roles and therefore ensuring a smoother and more exciting run as we follow the Deputy Chief of the Priority Homicide Division and her team of loyal, and earnest detectives.

Some of the cases in this season are quite intriguing, and the best of the season is saved for the last disc, which features 3 brilliant episodes that follow a linear progression, as our team of heroes face their toughest challenge yet. The casting is of course brilliant, with Kyra Sedgwick the perfect choice for the smart yet flawed Deputy Chief. As for the rest, special mention must be made of Tony Denison and G.W. Bailey as Lt. Flynn and Lt. Provenza, respectively. Their camaraderie and conversational jousting features some hilarious one-liners and their obvious chemistry and kinship is quite a sight to behold.

One of the common elements in this season is that the mysteries are becoming harder and harder to unravel. And the cases are never as clear-cut as you might think. Which for us "arm-chair" detectives, is exactly what we like. (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)

Brenda's back. Finally accepted by her LAPD homicide team after a year of hard-won victories, Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson spends less time fighting her co-workers, and more time fighting the bad guys - like whoever left a body in Lt. Provenza's garage, or dropped a porn star's head in a dumpster, or offed a drug-addicted heiress.

And there's almost as much happening on the domestic scene as the crime scene: Gabriel and Daniels kindle a romance and Brenda and Fritz put the flame under theirs when Fritz moves in.
