Thriller meets chick lit in a compelling easy read. The book starts with the funeral of a wife and mother of a rich well-connected family. Lily has been brutally murdered, just before Christmas in her own home, a well-liked and respected member of the community. Who could possibly do this and why? The funeral brings a surprise guest, Kate the daughter’s estranged best friend Blaire. The girls have not been in touch since Kate’s wedding to Simon. Blaire devastated to hear of Lily’s passing, the women who for many years treated her as a surrogate daughter, giving her so much more that her own family, can not keep away. The loss brings both girls together again and they reconnect almost instantly. Then Kate starts receiving threats, she is terrified, dark messages are left in her home that she shares with her husband Simon and their daughter. Blaire now a successful Detective Author wants to get the bottom of who the murderer is. Who has access to their home, is Simon all he seems? Lily and her husband had rowed just before she died, and Lily contacted her solicitor to change her will, so is Kate’s father Harrison in the frame? The stress takes its toll on Kate who begins to suspect everyone in their close circle, Blaire is the only one she can trust as she has a rock-solid alibi for the night of the murder. Kate appears to be losing her mind and is close to a breakdown when the police get a breakthrough. This was an easy read and kept my interest throughout. It was good to read a thriller from the intended victim’s perspective and I had no idea who the murderer was until all was revealed. It did however lack the intensity of a good crime story.
