Introducing a proven, pioneering program that empowers trauma
survivors to take control of their recovery through imaginative
exercises Over the last thirty-five years, our understanding of
trauma has dramatically changed. We now know that most people live
through at least one traumatic event--which can cause disorders
that range from depression, addiction, and anxiety, to
cardiovascular disease and diabetes. But when leading German
psychotherapist Luise Reddemann became head of a psychosomatic
clinic in 1985, many doctors were routinely dismissive of patients'
trauma. Dr. Reddemann has devoted her career to this question: How
can survivors of complex trauma and PTSD heal--and even help
themselves to heal? In Who You Were Before Trauma, she presents her
groundbreaking method, along with positive therapeutic strategies,
to therapists and patients alike. Psychodynamic Imaginative Trauma
Therapy (PITT) incorporates imagination work at every stage of the
three-phase trauma therapy model: Establish safety and
stabilization Come to terms with traumatic memories Integrate and
reconnect with others. By guiding patients to unearth their buried
strengths, envision an inner refuge, evoke helpful guiding figures,
and ultimately build an "internal counterweight" to their trauma,
Reddemann's approach avoids the counterproductive dynamic where the
therapist becomes the patient's only source of comfort. This
definitive trauma resource shows the way to empower survivors--by
making them true partners in their recovery.

"The Poet of Trauma Therapy" now in English
Sat, 11 Jul 2020 | Review
by: Rupert Maria K.
Luise Reddemann, German trauma pioneer, psychotherapist, psychoanalyst and founder of Psychodynamic Imaginative Trauma Therapy — PITT — has rightfully been called »the poet of trauma therapy« for her artful and creative approach to the treatment of trauma patients.
At long last, one of her central works on PITT is now available in English. The book follows loosely the phases of trauma therapy: creating safety and stability — dealing with painful experiences and memories — integration and re-connecting with others and the world. Backed by a trusting therapeutic alliance, the essential tool for achieving this is imagination, to create safe inner spaces, confront the traumatic experience and finally build a stable, coherent inner world. There is an additional chapter on PITT with children and adolescents.
My personal experience of working with PITT for years, with many patients, sometimes under most difficult conditions, has led me to appreciate that this is done with all the clarity that’s needed, but without any harshness or brutality, while safeguarding patients’ dignity at every single point in therapy. PITT always focusses on patients’ strengths, not on their deficits. And last but not least: PITT works. And it can be used by psychotherapists irrespective of their theoretical background.
The book contains lots of practical exercises, it addresses both therapists and their patients.
In times of COVID-19 it has to be mentioned that these techniques are highly useful for dealing with trauma-prone professionals, too, e.g. all kinds of healthcare workers, to protect them and prevent primary and secondary trauma sequelae.
A note to the publisher: We’re waiting for the therapist’s manual in English now …
