A triple-bill of Christmas favourites. In 'Home Alone' (1990)
ten-year-old Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) is banished to his room while
his family prepares for a Christmas trip to Europe. He wakes up to
find they have inadvertently left without him. Kevin must cope not
only with life on his own but also with the threat of two
persistent, albeit incompetent, burglars (Joe Pesci and Daniel
Stern). Meanwhile, his mother (Catherine O'Hara) vainly tries to
find a way to get back home. The remake of the 1947 'feel good'
classic 'Miracle On 34th Street' (1994), tells the heart-warming
story of a young girl's desire for a fully-functional family,
complete with a father and a baby brother. The girl, Susan (Mara
Wilson), confides in Kris Kringle (Sir Richard Attenborough), the
kindly old man who is acting as the grotto Santa in the department
store managed by her mother (Elizabeth Perkins). Kris Kringle,
however, believes he is the genuine Santa Claus and this devotion
to the cause makes him very popular indeed, leading to record
profits for the store. This annoys rival retailers so much that
they try to discredit the so-called Santa, leading eventually to a
court case in which Kringle and his lawyer try to prove that he is
the real thing. Finally, in 'Jingle All the Way' (1996), Howard
Langston (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is a busy executive who wants to
keep in his son's good books by buying him the present at the top
of his Christmas list: the Turbo Man doll. The only problem is that
Turbo Man is the most popular toy in America, and nearly all the
department stores have sold out. Howard spends a desperate
Christmas Eve attempting to track down his son's dream present, but
finds himself in constant conflict with a crazed postman on a
similar mission.
