This book deals with the harsh realities that the indentured faced from their recruitment in India, their stormy and perilous passage to Natal and their experiences in that Colony.
It breaks completely new ground in that it shows Gandhi in an entirely different light to that portrayed by most historians of the Indians in South Africa. Gandhi came to South Africa at the invitation of a merchant class family. To be fair he had no intention of getting involved in the South African Indian Emancipation struggle but when he finally did so he became the champion of the interests of the rich merchant class.
This book shows that at this stage Gandhi was not interested in the harshly oppressed indentured laborers.

The Incredible Journey From India

The Incredible Journey from India An Untold Part of South African History is a gripping story about how the mother and daughter first came to Natal in 1863, followed by the father in 1864, gave birth to three sons in India, had them educated in a boarding school, and finally brought them to Natal in 1892. It seems that their parents were from a very well organised family background. This is not an unemotional account, the resentment and protests of the author, who is the grandson of one of the brothers, are frequently expressed rather than just allowing the facts to speak for themselves. Incredibly well researched and validated by a great deal of documentation and pictorial evidence.

One of my all time favourites. Great narration, very intelligent, very fascinating, keeps you going on and on, page by page until the end to discover more about a slice of SA history not found in history books. Simply brilliant!

“The Book of the Year”

When I was living in London, I read ‘They came from India, The Narrandes Family’.
This was a great, well researched book but this new book is an even better read.
Reading this updated version, the two brothers were no push over’s. I would have
liked to have witnessed just one of the many feuds.
“..... Mr Gandhi was quick to capitalise on the miner’s strike in Northern Natal. He
was not interested in the welfare of the workers and stepped into the fray to hog the
limelight and win headlines at home and abroad, especially in India.”
Here again we come face to face with the strong differences between Mr Gandhi,
Gunpath and Gopaul Narrandes over the industrial strike. Added to the differences
on other issues, it was becoming clear why Gunpath, Gopaul (G) Narrandes were being
written out of history. .....”
This book will shock you, then shake you and then inspire you. “The Book of the Year”
