Ellis meets up with reckless Jackie, who leads him to the
Land-of-Smiles, a rundown former motel, filled with a motley
selection of drifters and curious characters. Ursa, Leo and Fox are
three sisters, coming to terms with a horrific past which colours
their lives forever. Ellis is drawn to all three of them, but
especially Leo, whose love for baby Shelley leads them all on a
wild adventure to save her from confused and evil Christo. In this
strangely compulsive novel, the reader meets dangerous,
unforgettable characters living in a precarious present and trying
to come to terms with their problems. Ellis wants to be an actor,
but at 17 he still has to resolve his feelings towards his dead
friend, Simon, whose sudden suicide has filtered through all his
dreams. He needs to find his own personality and his own voice and,
at the end of the novel, which takes place at breakneck speed in 24
hours, he has made a worthwhile beginning. Despite the
eccentricities of the characters, the reader is moved by their
vulnerability and Margaret Mahy's gritty description and
unsentimental treatment of her theme and characters keep the reader
gripped to the last line. (Kirkus UK)
'Home. Holidays. Free, thought Ellis.' Well not quite free, with university on the horizon. But free from school.
Free, although his best friend is dead.
Free to think about the future.
Free to transform his life.
When Ellis meets up with Jackie and three mysterious sisters, he is drawn into a number of increasingly bizarre situations. They introduce him to The Land of Smiles, where appearances are deceptive and being different is the norm. Ellis is sucked relentlessly into a drama from which he cannot escape. It's a matter of life and death, but time is against him.
The clock ticks on.
In twenty-four hours, Ellis is changed forever.
