The main problem with any remake is that it automatically invites comparison with the original – in this case the 1968 classic that starred Charlton Heston (who had to prove to the world at the time that there was life after Moses and Ben-Hur) In this one,Mark Wahlberg proves to be a much more sympathetic hero than Heston was; Danny Elfman’s musical score is one of the best he’s ever written…and a new spin has been put onto the shock ending. Otherwise there’s remarkably little to choose between the two pictures.

In 2029, Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) works with trained primates on the Oberon space station. A large electromagnetic storm triggers the alarm. A chimpanzee named Pericles takes a space pod to go and investigate…and promptly disappears! Leo takes a second pod to search for his chimp. He winds up on a strange planet where educated apes are the dominant species; and humans are their slaves!
Leo is captured, but befriends a female ape, Ari, (Helena Bonham Carter) whose father (David Warner) has great political influence. Ari buys both him and female slave Daena (Estella Warren) to work in the house of her father.

Needless to say, Leo contrives to escape…
Tim Burton's 're-imagining' of the 1968 sci-fi classic. The year is 2029, and Capt. Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) is aboard a spaceship trying to teach apes how to become space pilots. During a routine reconnaissance mission outside the mothership, Leo is sucked into a space-time hole and minutes later makes a crash landing on a strange planet where humans are subjugated by talking apes. Just as a quick death at the hands of the violent ape leader General Thade (Tim Roth) seems inevitable, Leo is rescued by the ape scientist Ari (Helena Bonham-Carter). Ari suspects mankind has more skills than the sacred documents of the apes describe and soon the race is on to outwit Thade and discover the true history of the planet and its original population.
