Students of the great contemporary Jewish thinker, Martin Buber, are aware that all of his works exemplify the spirit of the Old Testament. Not all will be aware of his writings which deal specifically with Biblical studies. A fairly complete corpus of these studies appeared as the second volume of his collected works. In this present volume, eighteen studies have been brought together and edited, with extensive bibliography, by Dr. Glatzer. An introductory essay on "The Man of Today and the Jewish Bible" states Buber's existentialist approach to the Bible - to be read "as something entirely unfamiliar," yet to be "yielded to with his whole being." Succeeding studies range through important passages of the Old Testament, from "The Tree of Knowledge" (Genesis 3) to the Apocalyptic literature, Job, and Psalm 73. Buber, as the editor points out. "stands on the periphery of Biblical scholarship" relying upon his intuitive grasp of issues. The result is rich in insight and contemporary in significance, for both lay as well as scholarly readers. (Kirkus Reviews)
On the Bible acquaints the reader with Martin Buber's works on Scripture and with his endeavor to elucidate the meanings of biblical ideas in ages past and in our own time.
