This somewhat violent film from Martin Scorsese was honoured with four Oscars: namely, for Best Film, Best Direction (Scorsese), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Editing – the last-mentioned being very good indeed.
Young Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) is being groomed by mobster Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson) as his informant in the police just as soon as he – Colin – is old enough to join the force. At the same time: Billy Costignan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is being recruited by Police Captain Oliver Queenan, and trained in such a manner as to be able to infiltrate Costello’s gang. Of course neither informant is aware of the presence of the other…who both fall for the same girl: beautiful psychiatrist Madolyn Madden (Vera Farmiga).
It’s a story filled with treachery and counter-treachery, and the body-count grows with each violent step along the blood-spattered way.
Top acting honours must go to Mark Wahlberg, who was a shade unlucky not to win an Oscar for his performance here as Staff Sergeant Sean Digman – an Irishman, naturally!
Rookie cop Billy Costigan grew up in crime. That makes him the perfect mole, the man on the inside of the mob run by boss Frank Costello. It's his job to win Costello's trust and help his detective handlers bring Costello down.
