While cinema audiences usually have no problem in accepting
dramatic actors in a
comedic role: many stars who customarily make one laugh have become alienated by their previously loyal fans when they get to play a straight part for a change! Hosts of examples include the likes of Charlie Chaplin; Peter Sellers; Bob Hope, Danny Kaye, and, more recently, Robin Williams; Michael J Fox, and Jim Carrey. In
Glory, it's Matthew Broderick's turn - although
The New York Times enthused: "Broderick gives his most mature and controlled performance to date!"
As with so many films depicting true-life happenings, Glory is a very inspiring and moving story. During the American Civil War, recently-promoted Colonel Robert Shaw (Broderick) is given the unenviable task of becoming the military leader and forming the U.S. Army's first African American soldier regiment! The raw recruits under his command include a tough, rebellious escaped slave called Trip (Denzel Washington - who won a "Best Supporting Actor" Oscar for his performance); Union Army former grave digger John Rawlins (Morgan Freeman), whom Shaw promotes to the rank of Sergeant-Major on the battlefield; tough unyielding white discipline Irish Sergeant Major Mulcahy (John Finn) who constantly berates the men, and an educated black freeman named Thomas Searles (Andre Braugher), who eagerly signs up.
In addition to Denzel Washington's Oscar: this film was nominated for (and won!) numerous other international awards that are too many to mention here! The musical score is unmistakeably by James Horner; while Edward Zwick directs.
This one is good; really good!
The heart-stopping story of the first black regiment to fight for the North in the Civil War,
Glory stars Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes and Morgan Freeman.
Broderick and Elwes are the idealistic young Bostonians who lead the regiment; Freeman is the inspirational sergeant who unites the troops; and Denzel Washington, in an Oscar-winning performance (1989, Best Supporting Actor), is the runaway slave who embodies the indomitable spirit of the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts.
The 54th overcame seemingly insurmountable odds in their fight to join the war for freedom. Underpaid and ill-equipped, facing certain death at the hands of the Confederacy, the 54th rose to every challenge; their courage, skill and sacrifice paving the way for the Union's ultimate victory.
Based on the true story of America's forgotten heroes, Glory is one of the greatest war movies ever made.
