Lost - Season 4 (DVD, Boxed set)

After the cliffhanger ending of season 3, the return of our favourite castaways ensures that the answers we've been seekeng all along finally start seeing the light of day. And even though this fourth season only has 14 episodes, due to the writers' strike in the U.S, the show still manages to cram a truckload of twists, turns and shocking revelations into the almost-600 minutes running time. And as is to be expected, for every revelation and question that gets solved, there's another new tantalizing mystery that knocks the wind out of you.

This fourth season manages to be even more exciting than seasons two and three, and that's quite a feat. One of the welcome changes to the normal storytelling style is instead of the usual "flashbacks" that enhance our knowledge of the characters, the creators have now introduced "flash-forwards" and this sets up a suspense-building climax as we approach the inevitable end of this season.

The performances are once again first-rate, with the surprising return of some familiar faces, and there's also the introduction of some truly nasty new characters. The star of the show remains the actual island though, with the gorgeous luch scenery proving beauty and danger to all who are stranded on it. Also has one of the most exciting season finales since season one. (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)

But as they have discovered during their 70-plus days on the island, danger and mystery loom behind every corner, and those they thought could be trusted may turn against them.
