It's been 8 years since Mel Gibson's last acting performance, in 2002's Signs, and although his personal life has been very controversial lately, it is definitely a welcome return to the screen for him, in the kind of role he is well accustomed to.

Gibson plays Craven, a Boston police detective. When his daughter is gunned down in front of him at the start of the movie, he assumes that he himself was the intended target and embarks on a vengeful quest to find and punish those responsible. But the plot holds many surprises in store, ones which won't be divulged by me.

The performances are rock-solid, although being set in Boston, the accents are heavy with an Irish brogue. So much so that it can get hard-to-understand at times. But beyond that, the storyline is exciting while the action is edgy and tense. Although the character of Craven is very similar to Gibson's Martin Riggs from Lethal Weapon, he still manages to be a highly sympathetic hero, and the movie manages to be a highly entertaining mystery with a terrific ending. (4 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)

Thomas Craven is a veteran homicide detective for the Boston Police Department and a single father. When his only child, twenty-four year-old Emma, is murdered on the steps of his home, everyone assumes that he was the target.

But he soon suspects otherwise, and embarks on a mission to find out about his daughter's secret life and her killing. His investigation leads him into a dangerous, looking-glass world of corporate cover-ups, government collusion and murder – and to shadowy government operative Darius Jedburgh, who has been sent in to clean up the evidence.

Craven's solitary search for answers about his daughter's death transforms into an odyssey of emotional discovery and redemption.

Review This Product

Sat, 19 Feb 2011 | Review by: Micky B

The "giveaway nothing" title was first a BBC-TV series that has now spawned this movie. It is actually a good mystery thriller, heralding a long-absent Mel Gibson's welcome back to the screen! Boston Police detective Thomas Craven (Gibson) and his daughter Emma (Bonjana Navakovic) are exiting Thomas's home together, when a voice cries out: "Craven!" and a masked gunman opens fire with a shotgun, killing Emma. As a homicide detective, Thomas thinks that naturally the shots had been meant for him. But is that the truth? His investigations soon reveal that he has opened up a gigantic can of worms; one that could lead right up to congressional level. The closing moments of the story, told as a wordless fantasy, are worth the admission price alone! The question is: will the now-more-mature Mel Gibson continue to grow old gracefully, as Sir Sean Connery has done before him...?
