While an absolute must for the ABBA freak, this delightfully refreshing musical doesn't do for former 'James Bond' Pierce Brosnan what Paint Your Wagon didn't do for Clint Eastwood a few years back; got the message? In future, let's rather leave the singing to the singers, shall we?...and the action to the action heroes, right?
Meryl Streep is, of course, perfectly suited as Donna Sheridan; owner of the Villa Doinna hotel on the idyllic Greek island of Kalokairi; and the mother of Rosie Mulligan (skinny-legged but otherwise very pretty Amanda Seyfried), who is about to get married. Unbeknown to Donna, Rosie has invited three men, who are not on the guest list, to her wedding; one of which she knows has to be her biological father! But which one is it?
Yes, it's all played for laughs all right; and the outcome, though made obvious earlier on, is a satisfyingly happy one. Meryl Streep deservedly won several awards for her role here.
Verdict: more of an "A" grade chick flick than a true musical as such...and I would have liked to see more scenic views of the beautiful island of Kalokairi. Otherwise its pretty darn good!
An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna is about to let go of Sophie, the spirited daughter she's raised alone. For Sophie's wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best friends - practical and no-nonsense Rose and wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own.
On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna's past to the Mediterranean paradise they visited 20 years earlier. Over 24 chaotic, magical hours, new love will bloom and old romances will be rekindled on this lush island full of possibilities.
Inspired by the storytelling magic of ABBA's songs from "Dancing Queen" and "S.O.S." to "Money, Money, Money" and "Take a Chance on Me." Mamma Mia! is a celebration of mothers and daughters, old friends and new family found.

A glorious musical, sweet and romantic. And it helps tremendously if you're an ABBA fanatic.
