Transformers (DVD)

Director Michael Bay made his directorial debut in 1995 with the surprise hit Bad Boys, he then followed this up with The Rock, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, Bad Boys, The Island and now he returns with Transformers, based on the popular 80's toyline. In all his previous movies, he always managed to make action movies seem fresh. He knows just where to make you laugh and where to take your breath away with an awesome set-piece or two.

Well, let me just say, you haven't seen anything yet. Transformers has to be one of the most spectacular sci-fi action movies I have ever seen. Terrific performances from a relatively B-list cast (although Shia Leboeuf is a star in the making), and some truly breathtaking CGI effects all add to the sheer enjoyment. The plot is a tad bit all-over-the-place, but a movie like this is not here to give your brain a workout, it's here to serve as a feast for the eyes (and ears - this movie is loud!).

Coming back to the special effects, they're the most realistic I have ever seen in any movie, period. You truly believe that you're witnessing gigantic robots clashing in crowded cities or interacting with their human counterparts. Their are explosions, twisted metal, bullets and rockets galore - in essence a boy's movie then. But their are also quite a few moments of humor, courtesy of Shia and some classic cameo appearances by Bernie Mac and Anthony Anderson. There is a bit of a romance angle as well, so the girls needn't despair. Plus girls, it's got Josh Duhamel and did I mention Shia Leboeuf?

All in all, a perfect family film for the summer season. A rollicking blockbuster that will have you clapping, laughing and awe-inspired. (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)

The Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, now have a new agenda: to protect Sam and to retrieve the Allspark before the evil Megatron and his Decepticons can obtain it.

This extraordinary adventure features spectacular action scenes, awe inspiring visual effects sequences and genuine warmth & humour and will appeal to the kid in all of us.
