Wow, what a cast! In alphabetical order, they include: Harry Andrews; Michael Caine; Trevor Howard; Curt Jurgens; Iain McShane; Kenneth More; Laurence Olivier; Nigel Patrick; Christopher Plummer; Michael Redgrave; Ralph Richardson; Robert Shaw; PatrickWymark, and Susannah York. Needless to say, the acting is impeccable. Also, we have the combined talents of producer, Harry Saltzman; and director, Guy Hamilton - who had already completed several James Bond movies together.
Although many of the air sequences were achieved by means of radio-controlled models, the technicolor photography is marvellous throughout, and the quality of sound is of export quality too. Ron Goodwin, it would seem, only writes air music, and his achievement here is right up to standard!
Rather than try to follow a single storyline: the producers have rather chosen a series of cameo sequences involving small groups of people during the Battle of Britain rather than to bore the audience with what would be simply a rather lengthy documentary on "The Few," and how the various battles were won or lost during the early war years. As a result: things are kept alive and interesting – even if the occasional poetic licence has been taken here and there. But then, allegedly "true" American war movies have been doing this for years, right?
This is a nostalgic reminder of what WWII life must have been like in Britain... and gives us a full parade of what the aerial war machines that were used by both sides at the time, actually looked and sounded like. Somewhat wisely, no attempt has been made to simulate tracer bullets; but that hardly detracts from the dramatic impact of this high-impact war film.
Featuring a stellar cast, including Michael Caine, Trevor Howard, Laurence Olivier, Christopher Plummer, Michael Redgrave, Robert Shaw, Susannah York and Edward Fox,
Battle Of Britain is a spectacular retelling of a true story that shows courage at its inspiring best.
Few defining moments can change the outcome of war; but when the outnumbered Royal Air Force defied unsurmountable odds in engaging the German Luftwaffe, they may well have altered the course of history!
