Sir Michael Caine may be growing old, but he's still one of the best cinema actors around!

This is very much a "today" picture that deals with the ever-increasing youth crime in England. Harry Brown (Michael Caine) is a lonely Northern Ireland marine veteran, who lives in a run-down South London housing estate; where drugs, pornography, and violence are the order of the day. His wife is very ill and in the local hospital, and his sole pleasure is to play chess with his old friend Leonard Attwill (David Bradley). But then Leonard falls foul of a local teenage gang, and likeable Detective Inspector Alice Frampton (Emily Mortimer) is sent to investigate. However, Emily's superior officer, Superintendent Childs (Iain Glen), proves to be a real pompus, glory-seeking idiot - so Harry decides to take matters into his own hands.

The whole thing does bear a distant resemblance to the American Death Wish series of movies of a few years back, and is every bit as violent. But it is a film of a far higher calibre, and made with the kind of passion that makes it all quite believable. The direction, acting, editing, photography, and background musical score cannot be bettered, and despite the vile language, I'd rate this as definitely one of the most enjoyable films I have seen in my lifetime! A definite five-star rating.
Set in modern day Britain, Harry Brown follow's one man's journey through a chaotic world where drugs are the currency of the day and guns run the streets.

A modest law-abiding citizen, Harry Brown is a retired Marine and a widower who lives alone on a depressed housing estate. His only company is his best friend Leonard.

When Leonard is murdered by a gang of thugs, Harry feels compelled to act and is forced to dispense his own brand of justice.

As he bids to clean up the run-down estate where he lives, his actions bring him into conflict with the police, led by investigating officer DCI Frampton and Charlie Creed-Miles.

HARRY BROWN

Fri, 9 Nov 2012 | Review by: Micky B

This is an excellent crime drama - despite its somewhat uninteresting title - and a perfect vehicle for Michael Caine, who has no need to conceal his true age here. The story concerns one Harry Brown Caine,) a widowed Royal Marines veteran, who had served in Northern Ireland during The Troubles, and now lives in a London housing estate in his old age. After a good friend (Liam Cunningham) is murdered by what appears to be a gang of teenage hoodlums, Harry decides to act on his own in exacting violent revenge on the individual gang members. While it would still be a good picture in black and white, it certainly is enhanced in colour - while Michael Caine's performance, as usual, of top quality.
