The sixth Jackson Lamb thriller
I enjoyed this book, both the style of writing and the description of the various characters who have been demoted to the Slough House part of the Secret Service from the Regent’s Park house.
However, it took me a long time to get my head around each character as I have never read any of the other books in the series. There were a lot of references to previous events but some of them were not explained until quite far on in the book which meant that I had no real empathy with them. This often happens with a series of books but probably when there are 5 earlier stories, for me, it was a step too far.
Having said all that, I can see why these books are popular, I actually enjoyed Mr Herron’s writing and his comments on the very real situation that we are currently in regarding Brexit.
The plot revolves around Lucas Harper whose father, Rod, has been murdered. Whilst helping out as a caterer at a large gathering in a country house in Wales he inadvertently saw something involving a young girl and VIP’s including a member of royalty engaging in something that they shouldn’t! He decides to try and blackmail the participants not realising that he is getting involved with people who will stop at nothing to shut him up including killing him. One of Jackson Lamb’s spooks, Louisa Guy, decides that she needs to find Lucas before the bad guys do mainly out of a sense of guilt due to the affair that she had had with Lucas’ father Rod. She takes leave from her job but once she realises who she is dealing with calls for help from her colleagues.
This brings three of the other characters to Wales to help rescue Lucas. All of the characters have got their back stories but some of them are not fully explained in this book which left me unsure as to why and what was happening. This made some of the story unclear to me and I think I really needed to have read at least some of the previous books.
However, I am sure that for Mr Herron’s supporters this is another good book in the Jackson Lamb series.
