The Holiday (DVD)

Heralded by The Hollywood Reporter as “a Yuletide chick flick with plenty of heart,” this one is very much more enjoyable than that comment would make it sound.

Two completely different young women in Iris (Kate Winslet) and Amanda (Cameron Diaz) live in Surrey and Los Angeles respectively. The have only one thing in common: each is suffering from a recently failed love affair! Making contact on the Internet, they mutually agree to take a complete break by both crossing the Atlantic from different directions, and swapping homes over the Christmas season.

In America: through legendary veteran movie scriptwriter Arthur (Eli Wallach), Iris meets up with music writer Miles (Jack Black)…while over in England, Amanda encounters Iris’s elder widower brother Graham (Jude Law) when he stumbles into Iris’s house in an inebriated state. Needless to say, both Miles and Jack are also casualties from seriously broken romantic encounters.

Predictable up to a point, the film boasts superb scenery and settings; excellent acting, and a memorable musical score by Hans Zimmer.

Watch for Dustin Hoffman in a brief walk-in role in a video rental store, where Miles is discussing The Graduate.

Meet Iris (Kate Winslet) and Amanda (Cameron Diaz), two women who couldn't be more different - one lives in a cosy English cottage, the other in a swanky Hollywood estate - but who are alike in their mutual bad luck with men.

In desperate need of an escape, they meet online and impulsively switch homes. Both find the last thing either wants or expects - a new romance - and discover that a change of address really can change your life.

This is a poor movie that supposes to expound the joys of love, but leaves you feeling empty and that love might be meaningless.

My granddaughter (age 23) recommended this movie to me as a light-hearted "double" love story. I THOROUGHLY enjoyed it and will shortly be purchasing my own copy. I shall probably watch it over and over (as I do with many movies). I would recommend "The Holiday" to anyone who would like to watch a thoroughly "feel good" movie.
