Liverpool nightclub owner Mickey O'Neill (Adrian Dunbar) arouses
the wrath of his community when he books a mystery singer and
implies he's the legendary Irish tenor Josef Locke. Caught out by
his girlfriend's mother (Shirley Ann Field), who had an affair with
the real Locke years before, Mickey tries to gain face by
travelling to Ireland, contacting the tax-exiled tenor (Ned
Beatty), and persuading him to come out of hiding.
