Ernest Hemingway – were he alive today – could well have written the screenplay for this clever, though violent, action-packed drama about gun running. It starts, however, on a black-comedy note, and we see an actual television advertisement for Amnesty International that extols the virtues of the AK-47 semi-automatic rifle! Then Nicholas Cage tells us matter-of-factly, “There are over 550 million firearms in worldwide circulation. That's one firearm for every twelve people on the planet. The only question is: How do you arm the other eleven?”

But from here on, matters become deadly serious – and I mean that quite literally. Cage plays Yuri Orlov; a man born in the Ukraine before he came with his parents to settle in America. Following his witnessing a Russian Mafia boss’ killing of two men: he sets his sights on becoming a gun-runner.

He succeeds in his ambition…and that’s what the picture is all about. However, there’s also a cynical slant in that it makes us aware of the sort of people who get to need a gun-runner’s services. Believe me, it’s quite a scary eye-opener!
Tense thriller about the arms industry and gun-running, starring Nicolas Cage and Ethan Hawke. Yuri Orlov (Cage) starts his career as an arms dealer on the streets of Little Odessa in the 1980s, selling handguns to mobsters. By the 1990s, after entering into a partnership with an insane African warlord, Orlov is one of the most successful arms dealers in the world. But success comes at a price, as Orlov's career damages his relationships with his wife and his younger brother, and as determined Interpol agent Jack Valentine (Hawke) decides to bring him down. Drunk on his own success and plagued by his inner demons, Orlov spins rapidly out of control.
