"What were you doing in Dallas on November 22nd?" This was the stock buzz-phrase that was bandied around - usually good-humouredly - during the closing stages of 1963. Yet strangely enough: even today, nearly everybody who was alive then can clearly recall their exact movements at the time of President Kennedy's assassination - no matter where on the surface of the globe they happened to be!

With JFK, director Oliver Stone has created a very powerful motion picture indeed; one that won two Oscars (Best Cinematography; Best Editing) and was nominated for six more. True, it asks more questions than it can hope to answer... though it must be closer to the truth than any other work has yet achieved; given the facts as the world has been allowed to know them. We will only be given the whole truth when - by law - certain now-restricted documents must be released to the public by 2017.

Kevin Costner heads up a mega-cast, as Jim Garrison - the tenacious investigative officer and former New Orleans DA - whose task becomes more and more of a crusade as various facts are brought to light. His long-suffering wife, Liz, is played by Sissy Spacek. Tommy Lee Jones was nominated for an Oscar for his role as Clay Shore, while Gary Oldman is also very good indeed, as Lee Harvey Oswald. Other leading parts feature Joe Pesci; Kevin Bacon; Jack Lemmon; Walter Matthau; John Candy; Ed Asner; Donald Sutherland; and Brian Doyle-Murray (as Jack Ruby). Veteran composer John Williams is right on target, as usual, with the musical score - for which he also received an Oscar nomination.

I was so engrossed in the whole thing that I was surprised to learn later that the running time is about 200 minutes - that's over three hours!

Oliver Stone's powerful film about the shots heard around the world and the mystery enshrouding them is one of the most provocative movies of all time. Besides its box-office success, critical acclaim and awards, it played a major role in the national debate leading to the passage of the 1992 Assassination Materials Disclosure Act.

This movie takes you deep into the mosaic of the turbulent investigation by Jim Garrison (Kevin Costner) into president John F. Kennedy's assasination in 1963.
