Hitler Moves East, 1941-1943 (1965) ended with the Battle of Stalingrad. This chunky second volume skips half a year (the intervening operations are later described in flashbacks) to start right off with the Battle of Kursk in July 1943, which German military historian Carell considers the real turning-point of the Russian war: "The German victorious advance ended at Stalingrad - the German defeat began at Kursk." Hitler, ignoring the urgent demonstrations of his field commanders that the German situation could be saved only by going over from a campaign of conquest to a war of attrition, staked everything on one vast offensive blow, Operation Citadel, the code name for the Battle of Kursk. In a panoramic portrayal that blends eyewitness accounts with historical documentary evidence, Carell depicts how the threatening Russian defeat turned into a victory for the Red Army, the start of a string of German reversals which by the end of July 1944 had brought the war back to the East Prussian frontier (where Carell leaves it). The account, despite the deluge of combat details and battlefield minutiae, aims at high readability with a deliberately sprightly style whose excesses (stagy conversations, sentimental anecdotes, melodramatic foreshadowing, rhetorical questions, exclamations galore) are easily forgiven. Laboriously researched to clarify the top-level decision-making, behind-the-scenes spying, and front-line tactical maneuvering, this is a de luxe narrative complete with numerous photos and maps, appended documents, and an extensive bibliography. (Kirkus Reviews)
The classic! This new edition of Paul Carrell's eastern front study picks up where Hitler Moves East left off. Beginning with the battle of Kursk in July 1943, Carell traverses the vast expanse of the Russian War, from the siege of Leningrad and the fierce battles of the norther front, to the fourth battle of Kharkov, and the evacuation of the Crimea, a withdrawal forbidden by Hitler. The book ends in June of 1944 when the Soviet Armies reach the East Prussian frontier. Hundreds of photographs, situation and campaign maps, complete index, and comprehensive bibliography, add to this impressive account. This edition includes a new preface by the author.
