Peter Goffe-Wood is well aware of one of the vital laws of nature - there are few sexier things in this world than a man who can make a great creme brulee. And in his new-style cookery book, Kitchen Cowboys, he gives macho men the licence to get their hands dirty - in the kitchen. As a 'Kitchen Cowboy' you don't have to be a 'new man' to exploit kitchen know-how and cunning culinary skills to their full potential. 'Food Alchemist' Goffe-Wood believes that the kitchen can be a valuable arena in which all men should comfortably strut their stuff; where they can hunt, gather, impress and ensure that it's not just the table that gets laid.
'Lads' of all ages will love this book - and not only for the great and easy-to-impress recipes either. Part of the book's appeal is its highly amusing and 'lad-accessible' style. Kitchen Cowboys exploits what women, chefs and readers of Anthony Bourdain have always known - cooking ain't for sissies.
The 'Kitchen Cowboys' concept grew from what Peter Goffe-Woods and a bunch of his laddish university mates originally labelled 'spadework cooking'. This involved attempting to dazzle a potential date with a jaw-dropping array of mouth-watering home-cooked dishes (for obvious nefarious reasons - see footnote below). But Kitchen Cowboys isn't just an introduction to the bedroom-via-the-kitchen for lads. The recipes are as delicious as they are accessible, and they're quick and easy to prepare so they won't detract from that valuable rugby-watching time. There's also that all-important info on what wine to serve with each dish and how to shop and stock the pantry. In fact, the book is packed full of great tips and practical advice (and not just about cooking, either).
Here's a 'taste' of what you can expect:
On brunch: "A good brunch can stave off a nasty hangover and may even ensure that you're still respected in the morning." The mouth-watering list of recipes includes the perfect bloody Mary, mozzarella and bacon-stuffed French toast and the essential brunch item - eggs benedict. After all, quips Goffe-Wood, "It's easy to be a good shag but can you follow with a decent eggs benedict?" (Read this book and you'll be great at at least one of the above).
On sushi: "Sushi is as trendy as text message sex; everyone loves it, apart from a few narrow-minded fools too inhibited to give it a try." Goffe-Wood also offers other 'sexy' eastern dishes - especially some fabulous thai curries. His lamb Vindaloo comes with a subtext: "Not the recipe for a first date but rather for drunk and disorderly late night sport watching with suitable fermented beverages".
On dessert: Desserts are a chance for the Kitchen Cowboy to "show [his] sensitive side". But who cares about sensitive when there's perfect (and simple) creme brulee and 'bloody beautiful' chocolate brownies to be had?
The true Kitchen Cowboy knows the secret of the perfect sandwich; he makes pasta like a pro (including the spectacular 'Fettuccine Puttanesca' - which aptly translates as 'tart's pasta'). And who could forget the all-important braai? The Kitchen Cowboy isn't going to be sweating over huge boring curls of charred wors and piles of blackened bloody chicken; he's going to be whipping up spatchcock quails with papaya chilli salsa before you can say butterflied lamb with Greek salad and huumus.
Kitchen Cowboys is the perfect way to lure the South African male away from the couch and to the hunting ground where he truly belongs - the kitchen.

*Please note: Women are very well aware of what you're doing when you rustle up more than a Debonairs' pizza on a first date (they just pretend they don't).
Sexual roles are constantly being challenged - never more so than in the kitchen. The sisters have been doing it for themselves for a while now, so the time has come for the brothers to go beyond. Men have been doing the eating for long enough; it's time to master the preparation, to boldly go where most fear to tread - to take over the kitchen!
Men have long been denied the right to hunt, and have replaced their lust for the kill with sport and the support thereof. Now new urban warriors are looking for more creative pastures to conquer.

Kitchen Cowboys will equip you with the know-how to make this challenging arena your new hunting ground. The book will rekindle that pioneering spirit, release the outlaw. It will equip you for intimate dinners, brunches with family and friends, and braais that will make men quiver and women swoon. It will imbue you with baking prowess that will leave swollen bellies in its wake, provide eastern secrets that will stun and mystify, and empower you with the skill to rustle up desserts that will melt the sternest resolve.
More importantly, you will find tips to build an appreciation for all things vinous that will make Bacchus a proud and mighty god.
