King Kong (DVD)

To my pleasant surprise, this 201-minute epic proved to be a most acceptable remake of the 1933 original – due in no small measure to the superb musical score by James Newton Howard. And of course modern-day technology and special effects have brought Edgar Wallace’s classic adventure yarn to the screen with vivid and thrilling reality that was not possible seventy-odd years ago.

Obsessive film director Carl Denham (Jack Black) has a map to Skull Island – and intends to film it as part of an adventure story he’s working on. Denham’s resemblance to the late Orson Welles is by no means coincidental. He signs up struggling vaudeville actress Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts) as the female lead; and she and playwright Jack Driscoll (Adrien Brody) promptly fall in love! Denham also casts established adventure movie actor Bruce Baxter (Kyle Chandler – remember him from the old TV series Early Edition?) as the male lead.

The party eventually sails to Skull Island where they encounter the giant ape King Kong – and many other dangerous creatures as well. Denham conspires to capture Kong alive, and bring him back to America where people will pay admission to see this “freak of nature” in captivity.

And don’t worry – I cry during this kind of movie too!
