Conspiracy theories hold an unending fascination. As early as the
17th century, stories were in circulation of the allegedly
omnipotent Jesuit Order and its global activities. 18th century
journalists observe the numerous secret societies and search for
the hidden processes of human machinations. In the Age of
Enlightenment, a oeunknown high-upsa are seemingly at work
everywhere; a oedisguiseda and working with a oeinvisible venoma
they direct bad fortune or plan the overthrow of the established
order. The present study is the first to use broadly-based material
to present a comprehensive reconstruction of the literary
composition of conspiracy scenarios between 1750 and 1850.
