This is a book for two groups of people: the Carers and the Recovering Addicts.

The Carers, described in this book as ‘the co-dependents’, are those people who, as professional care providers, family members, friends or colleagues, have personally experienced the effects of being associated with addicts and who wish to help the recovering dependent, and themselves, to deal with the recovery process.

The Recovering Addicts, described in this book as ‘the substance dependents, dependents or the recovering dependents’, are those people who have had personal experience of drug abuse, have undergone, or are undergoing, detoxification and treatment, are determined to stay drug-free and sober, and wish to help others to do the same.

This is a book that will help the recovering dependent, as well as co-dependents, to:

• describe the extent of the drug problem in South Africa
• identify the primary, dependence-forming substances
• describe the motivational pattern influencing addiction
• identify the need for lifestyle changes to enable long-term sobriety
• persuade an apparent substance dependent to undergo treatment at a selected treatment centre
• offer advice on dealing with the problems associated with substance dependence
• develop and implement a recovery plan
• implement a Lifestyle Changes Programme in an aftercare organisation in order to assist recovering dependents to remain sober, to develop to their potential and to become reintegrated into society
