Firstly, to get the negative aspects out of the way, this movie is split over 2 sides of the DVD disc. So halfway through, you actually have to get up and flip the disc over. And to add to that, the picture quality is not impressive at all. Both of these alarming aspects are actually a Warner Pictures standard for this title, worldwide. There has been much disgust and unhappiness from international customers regarding this, but Warner have still not remedied the issue.

As for the movie, this is one of my favourite films of all time, second only to A Few Good Men, this darkly comic and boldly violent gangster epic is a true masterpiece. Featuring career-best performances from Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta and Lorraine Bracco as well as a career-making one from Joe Pesci, who fully deserved his Academy Award.

The film follows a 30-year period in the lives of Henry Hill (Liotta) and his association with the Italian Mafia. The script features some of the most laugh-out-loud moments ever in a serious crime drama (all the good bits are delivered with extra zing by Pesci), and also some of the most expletive-filled rants (once again, courtesy of Pesci). The violence won't be for all tastes, but it's necessary in this story, especially when the script constantly surprises you and you start realising that you have no idea who might live and who might die or who's going to jail and who'll live happy ever after. Because as Henry soon finds out, once you're in the family, there's no way out.

Special mention has to be made of Scorsese's brilliant directing, which includes some glorious unbroken tracking shots and a 60's Motown soundtrack that's to die for. A classic in every sense of the word. (5 out of 5, by Carlise Johnson)

Ray Liotta plays Henry Hill, easily influenced and keen to live the good life. When he joins up with the local Mob family, all his dreams seemingly come true.

But living a life of crime, as Henry soon finds out, can be very dangerous. Especially when the guys in your crew, the Goodfellas, are psychotic and can't be trusted.

Covering a 30-year stretch in the lives of three key Mafia figures, this bold, unpredictable classic was one of the most powerful films of the 90's.

Review This Product

A true mob classic. Much better than The Godfather movies in my opinion. The chemistry between the main actors and their performances are all spot on. The movie is violent of course, but that's the world these guys were a part of.

Violent, repulsive, sometimes offensive, but yet so hilarious in certain scenes and definitely a mesmerizing film that wont be forgotten very soon. The definitive gangster movie for your DVD collection.
