Slow Burn (DVD)

District Attorney Ford Cole (Ray Liotta) is a former policeman who has made good…and right now he’s well on his way to becoming mayor. However, right at the start of the picture, his assistant, Nora Trimmer (Jolene Blalock) – a light-skinned Afro-American – is brought in on a charge of killing a man in what she claims was self-defence. However, a strange man in Luther Pinks (LL Cool J), with apparently shady connections, arrives out of the blue to completely contradict her version of the events.
During the course of Cole’s investigations, everything seems to point to one “Danny Mercer.” Only one problem: nobody seems to know who he is or even what he looks like – similar to the situation in Edgar Wallace’s play of the 1920’s: The Ringer, that was filmed in 1954, and again in 2006.
The subsequent unraveling of the plot is edge-of-the-seat stuff, and there is sufficient violent action thrown in to satisfy even those with low attention spans.
Verdict: an honest, worthwhile thriller.

Ray Liotta stars as Ford Cole in this drama about a District Attorney aiming for the top. With his eyes on the prize however, his ambitions are thrown into chaos when his Deputy Nora Timmer (Jolene Blalock), faces a murder charge, claiming self-defense. Into the mix steps Luther Pinks (LL Cool J), who knows a very different Nora Timmer from the one in City Hall. As his career begins to unravel, and with time running out, Cole must sort fact from fiction if he is to have a future.
