Shadowlands (DVD)

Nominated for two Oscars and winner of seven other international awards: this absolute masterpiece is a large chapter in the life of CS Lewis – the author of the Narnia books: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. “Jack” Lewis is portrayed here by Anthony Hopkins, no less. The film tells a touching love story…and director Richard Attenborough does his job with sufficient restraint so’s to prevent its becoming cloyingly over-sentimental.

Jack is teaching at Oxford College during the 1930s when he is visited by an American fan, Joy Gretham (Debra Winger) and her young son. Joy herself, a divorcee, is a somewhat spirited poet – and despite Jack’s somewhat drab and passionless existence, a spark of romance is ignited between them. But alas, Joy is soon to contract terminal cancer…

(During an interview for this movie, Hopkins said that, although tears could come very easily to him if he were acting, he does not cry easily in real life. He did, however, recall crying at a “Lassie” film when he was young.)

Richard Attenborough directs this adaptation of William Nichoson's play based on the true story of the love affair between C.S. Lewis and American Joy Gresham. Oxford don and acclaimed novelist (The Narnia Chronicles) C.S. Lewis (Anthony Hopkins) lives a quiet and reflective existence with his brother in a remote cottage outside the university town. However, his life is turned upside down when he strikes up a friendship with free-spirited American Joy (Debra Winger). The couple begin to fall in love, and they are drawn even closer after Joy is diagnosed with bone cancer.
