Brooklyn's Finest (DVD)

Actually filmed in some pretty tough neighbourhoods in and around New York City: this crime feature stars Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke, and Wesley Snipes (among others) in a superb character study; viz.

A week away from retirement, lonely whisky-swilling Officer Eddie Dugan (Richard Gere) is assigned to oversee some of the rookies who will soon be taking over from him. "Tango" Butler (Don Cheadle) is an undercover cop, who is struggling, against odds, to keep his cover. "Sal" Proceda (Ethan Hawke) is a cop who is not above stealing to support his large family. And "Caz" Phillips (Wesley Snipes), Tango's prison buddy, is one of Brooklyn's most infamous drug lords.

There are many other excellent performances too, and special mention must be made of Ellen Barkin, as sarky no-nonsense Federal Agent Smith; and Shannon Kane as Chantelle, the sympathetic prostitute frequestly visited by Eddie Dugan.

With a budget of only $17 million, apparently many members of the cast were prepared to take large pay cuts in order to get the movie made. And unfortunately it lets itself down with a running time of 132 minutes! Some dilligent re-editing wouldn't harm the story at all... and would serve to raise my rating from three stars to possibly four.

Burned out New York cop Eddie is just one week away from retirement, whilst drugs officer Sal is realising there’s no line he won’t cross to provide a better life for his family.

Meanwhile, Clarence “Tango” Butler has been undercover so long that he feels a closer allegiance to infamous drug dealer Caz than he does to the force.

All three cops find themselves hurtling towards the same crime scene on one fatal night in this tense, edge of your seat thriller.
