CHEYENNE AUTUMN
Tue, 25 Jun 2013 | Review

This was celebrated Western director John Ford's longest work (158 ninutes.) Sure, it is an epic movie...but just look at the cast! Amongst others, it features Richard Widmark; Carroll Baker; James Stewart (as Wyatt Earp; Edward G Robinson; Karl Malden; Sal Mineo; Delores del Rio; Ricardo Montalban; Gilbert Roland; Arthue Kennedy (as Doc Holliday;) Patrick Wayne; John Carradine; Victo Jory, and George O'Brien. Allowing for Hollywood's poetic license, it is a true story.
In 1878, chiefs Little Wolf(Ricardo Montalban) and Dull Knife (Gilbert Roland) lead over three hundred starved and weary Cheyennefrom their reservation in the Oklahoma territory to their home in Wyoming. The government sees this as an act of rebellion, and the sympathetic Captain Thomas Archer (Richard Widmark) is forced to lead his troops in an attempt to stop the tribe. As the press misrepresents the native's motives and goals for their trek as malicious, Secretary of the Interior Carl Schurz (Edward G. Robinson) tries to prevent violence from erupting between the army and the natives. And we must mention the comedy scene between Wyatt Earp (James Stewart and Doc Holliday (Arthur Kennedy!
Footnote: On completion of this movie, one of the Indian “extras” is reported to have asked director John Ford: “John Wayne not in this picture, That why we win?”
