Director Martin Scorsese has achieved the near-impossible by creating a remake that is even better than J Lee Thompson’s now-classic 1962 original! While retaining the same basic framework, this film expands on the original's themes in some depth, and adds more complex background details.

Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte) is a former Atlanta public defender who seeks to start a life in corporate law for him and his family in the quiet resort town of New Essex. Max Cady (Robert De Niro) is a client Sam defended 14 years previously. Cady has just been released from jail after serving a 14-year sentence…and now seeks revenge – having discovered additional evidence relating to his trial that Bowden conveniently omitted to bring to the court’s attention at the time. And Nolte’s Bowden is far from the ‘squeaky-clean’ Gregory Peck Bowden of the original!
Peck, Robert Mitchum and Martin Balsam all appeared in the earlier version too – but play completely different roles here. And Mitchum’s patently obvious face-lift makes him look almost comical!

Elmer Bernstein has kept much of Bernard Herrman’s 1962 music intact, but has branched off into other ideas of his own that are more in keeping with the mood of the newer film.
Fourteen years after being imprisoned, vicious psychopath Max Cady (Robert De Niro) emerges with a single-minded mission: to seek revenge on his attorney Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte). Cady becomes a terrifying presence as he menacingly circles Bowden's increasingly unstable family.

Realising he is legally powerless to protect his beautiful wife Leigh (Jessica Lange) and his troubled teenage daughter Danielle (Juliette Lewis), Sam resorts to unorthodox measures which lead to an unforgettable showdown in Cape Fear.

Visually stunning images and brilliant performances from a talented cast highlight this roller-coaster ride through relentless psychological torment.

Cape Fear

Tue, 20 Nov 2012 | Review by: Micky B

This Martin Scorsese thriller is not bad at all; albeit a remake (and a good one!) of the 1962 movie of the same name, that was directed by J Lee Thomson. The first one was in black and white, while this remake is in well-utilised colour. Max Cady (a superb performance by Robert DeNiro) is now out of prison after fourteen years – and is seeking revenge! He had been found guilty of rape and battery on a young woman; his defense lawyer being Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte,) whom Cady doesn’t believe performed his duties satisfactorily at the trial. During the long years while “inside,” Cady has taught himself to read – and is now as au fait with the law as any good attorney – including Bowden! Bowden has a wife, Lee (Jessica Lange) and a 15-year-old daughter (Juliette Lewis) – so right from the start we can see the direction the plot is about to take! (Claude Kerzick (big Joe Don Baker) is a private eye, who is assigned by Bowden to safeguard his family. Cameo performances by actors who appeared in the original film include Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum, and Martin Balsam. Bernard Herrmann’s exciting original musical score has stayed surprisingly intact by here by Elmer Bernstein. The film was nominated for – and won – several international awards.
