Everybody's Fine might be short of flashy dramatics, but it's meant to be a low-key comedy drama about the importance of family, and I for one couldn't find a single fault in the movie.
Frank Goode is a widowed father of four adult children. He was looking forward to all of them visiting him over one weekend, but for some inexplicable reason they all cancel. So he instead decides to surprise each of them in their respective cities (New York, Denver, Chicago, Las Vegas) by visiting them and spending a day or two with each of them. Unbeknownst to him though, but aware to us as the audience, his children have a secret which they aren't sure about revealing and so they are trying to avoid him instead. This makes for much awkwardness when he pops up unexpectedly on their doorsteps.
The plot set-up is straight-forward enough, but the family dynamics are the main attraction here. And even when the story might seem to be heading to a logical conclusion, there's actually a surprise or 2 thrown the audience's way. De Niro is brilliant as the father who feels like he's losing the bond with his children. It's so refreshing to see him in a movie that's not some silly comedy attempt, but is instead a story that all of us can enjoy and indeed learn from. And the rest of the performances are also very good, especially Sam Rockwell as his son Robert, who feels he's disappointed his father all his life.
It's rare to find a movie that can't put a single foot wrong, but Everybody's Fine is indeed one of those rare occurrences. In just a few words, it can only be described as a "masterpiece of storytelling". (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
Robert DeNiro leads an acclaimed all-star cast, including Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell, in this heartwarming film that will move you to laughter and tears.
When Frank Goode's grown children cancel a family reunion, the recent widower sets off on a cross-country journey to reconnect with each of them. Expecting to share in the joys of their happy, successful lives, his surprise visits reveal a picture that's far from perfect.
A family separated by physical and emotional distance needs to find a way to come together in a story that will touch your heart.
