Welcome to the grey, shadow world of intelligence and counter-intelligence agents! It is 1939, and intense young Yale University student Edward Wilson (Matt Damon) is being initiated as a member of Skull and Bones, a secret society that aims to create bonds among future leaders of the United States. It is only a matter of time before he is later recruited by the FBI through one Sam Murach (Alec Baldwin), who instructs him to “report” on his former poetry professor, whom they believe to be a Nazi spy.

General Bill Sullivan (Robert de Niro) then offers Edward a post in London, where he meets Margaret “Clover” Russell (Angelina Jolie) – whom he subsequently marries when he learns that she is pregnant. She has no idea what he does for a living. Their son, Edward Junior, will also become an agent in years to come…and this, in turn, will put Edward Sr in a dilemma of priorities. What is more important to you – your country, or your son?

Edward Bell Wilson (Matt Damon) is a patriotic, morally wholesome Yale graduate recruited by the fledgling CIA. His life is thrown into a dizzying chain of events as the full weight of the position he has accepted becomes clear. The strictest secrecy must be observed which causes friction between he and his new wife Margaret (Angelina Jolie). As America ushers in the era of cold war jitters, suddenly nobody trusts anyone, nobody is above suspicion and the only beliefs Wilson is left with - those of country and national pride - are challenged. The stellar supporting cast includes, among others, De Niro, Alec Baldwin, John Turturro and William Hurt.
