After years of build-up in the movies Iron Man
1 and 2; The Incredible Hulk
and Captain America
, the ultimate Marvel superhero team-up has finally arrived and boy did it exceed my expectations! I enjoyed The Incredible Hulk
and the first Iron Man
film, but after the disappointments (in my opinion) of Captain America
and Iron Man 2
, I didnt know how The Avengers
would turn out but it managed to be a thrill-packed adventure of the highest order!
In the plus column, it features clever humour (some of it even quite laugh-out-loud), great cast chemistry, and awesome action set-pieces. The climactic battle scene in New York was very reminiscent of Transformers 3 and it's "everything-but-the-kitchen-sink" climax in Chicago. But The Avengers did it so much better. It had action which you could actually follow on the screen, and it made sense! The visuals were totally realistic and grandeur, but it didnt feel as if it was done just for the sake of "blowing things up" as was the case with that over-the-top robot spectacle from Michael Bay.
In a film with such a big cast of lead characters, it's easy to lose focus on someone and maybe even character development in general, but director Joss Whedon manages the near-impossible of juggling all these balls in the air while also delivering a tight pacy storyline and still giving generous amounts of screen time to each of the team members. Everyone gets their moment to shine. Well, almost everyone. The one character who is a bit short-changed is Maria Hill, played by Cobie Smulders. Hopefully, she'll feature more in the sequels! Robert Downey jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson (as the man in charge) all suit their parts perfectly and their witty banter and camaraderie definitely bodes well for further adventures.
And the biggest revelation: the Hulk! Mark Ruffalo played him much better than Eric Bana or Edward Norton did in the 2 standalone movies, plus the Hulk also managed to get all the funniest scenes. 2 of them in particular had me busting a gut with laughter.
As for any negative aspects in the movie, I'd probably have to say the villain: Loki! I wasn't that impressed with him in Thor and he didn't seem evil enough this time around either. Also, his army featured no-one interesting, and they served mainly as bad guys who must've been hired from Henchmen-R-Us.
But beyond that, this still didn't distract from a totally amazing movie experience. And make sure to stay during the end-credits, there's a tantalising teaser to get you psyched for the next adventure... (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
