One of the best sports films we’ve seen in years – and it’s a true story too! Russell Crowe proves yet again that his Gladiator Oscar was certainly no flash-in-the-pan fluke. The guy really can act! And he’s perfectly cast here as real-life Irish-American former heavyweight boxing champion, James J Braddock, who became known to the world as “The Cinderella Man.”
Most so-called boxing movies are really anti-boxing in context, and this one is no exception. But actually it’s more an indictment against America’s depression-era way of life of the 1930s. Indeed, some of the scenes depicted are truly heartbreaking. However, if one can escape extreme poverty by fighting in order to provide for one’s family…well, why not? Renée Zellweger plays May Braddock, Jim’s loyal and longsuffering wife, with just the right amount of sensitivity, while Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti is simply great as trainer/manager Joe Gould. Craig Bierko portrays former heavyweight Max Baer a tad unkindly…but that’s just a personal opinion.
The director is Ron Howard. Yup the same Ron Howard who has already given us such cinematic gems as Cocoon; Apollo 13; Backdraft; A Beautiful Mind (also with Russell Crowe)…and many others. This one is up there with them!
Critically acclaimed biopic based on a true story. James J.
Braddock (Russell Crowe), dubbed 'Cinderella Man', was a
once-promising light heavyweight who suffered a string of losses in
the ring and broke his right hand. With one good hand, Braddock was
forced to labour on the docks of Hoboken, while only his manager
(Paul Giamatti) still believed in him, finding fights for Braddock
to help support his wife (Renee Zellweger) and children. One of the
sport's oddest couples, the diminutive, loquacious manager and the
burly quiet boxer start to stage an impossible comeback. In the
span of less than twelve months Braddock gets his shot at
heavyweight champion Max Baer (Craig Bierko), renowned for having
allegedly killed two men in the ring. As a 10-1 underdog, Braddock
carries the hopes and dreams of the desperate Depression-era
working class on his shoulders.
