An intelligent comment on the war in Iraq as told from the American point of view: this is more an indictment of the injustice of America's military policy towards its own soldiers than a “war movie” per se.

The somewhat ususual title refers to this contraversial policy whereby vounteer-troops who are about to be discharged, can suddenly be ordered back into action abroad for an indefinite period. A young was-weary Texan S/Sgt, Brandon King (Ryan Phillippe,) returns to his home town – only to receive orders that he is about to be shipped out to Iraq once again! To the horror of his war companion and best friend Steve Schriver (Channing Tatum,) Brandon opts to go AWOL and become a deserter. In this, he is surprisingly aided by Steve's girlfriend Michelle (Abbie Cornish.)

Thoroughly, no, meticulously researched and put together: this is a “message” movie every bit as much as a war actioner – and suceeds very well in both departments. The acting is also a step above the ordinary from a young and comparatively unknown cast. All in all it's well worth a viewing!

Director Kimberly Peirce returns to the screen with this topical drama about the war in Iraq.

Ryan Phillippe plays a solider who finally gets to go home to America, only to be called back to fight in the Middle East. But he doesn't want to go back, so instead he goes AWOL.
