In 1879 Edward Pollock opened a pipe works in Manchester that
survived for 111 years. This book provides a full exploration not
only of one particular family business but also of the clay
pipemaking industry in general. The study is based on a wealth of
primary evidence including an invaluable paper archive containing
letters, advertising material, employee records and the most
detailed description of the pipemaking process, as well as original
machinery and moulds. The history is supported throughout by
drawings of pipes and stamps as well as original archive
photographs. Includes a glossary of technical terms.
