This engrossing science fiction mystery might be a low budget, independent production, but it still manages to be a highly entertaining ride from beginning to end. This is due to the inventive storyline as well as the unmissable performance from Sam Rockwell.
Rockwell plays Sam Bell, an employee of Lunar Industries, a company that's harvesting helium to be used on Earth. He's stationed on the Moon, with an artificial intelligence programme named Gerty as his only company. His only contact with Earth is via recorded video transmissions with his employers and his wife. After three isolated years, he's finally due to return home, but an accident during a routine assignment leads him to to make some shocking discoveries.
That's all that can be explained of the plot without spoiling anything, but suffice it to say, the directions in which the story starts drifting will take you by constant surprise. And Rockwell's performance, as a man who's paranoia and isolation is taking its toll, is breathtaking to behold. He pulls off so many different character nuances with ease and deliberate sympathy. Kevin Spacey provides the voice of Gerty, in an obvious nod to 2001: A Space Odyssey.
And as the story races to an unpredictable climax, it becomes clear that first-time director Duncan Jones certainly wanted to concentrate on the story and not so much on the special effects. That being said though, the effects don't seem at all cheap and tawdry. They actually serve the plot very well. The best way to describe this film would probably be to label it a "sci-fi film noir", and that's a good thing! (4 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
Sam Bell is nearing the completion of his 3-year-long contract with Lunar Industries, mining Earth's primary source of energy on the dark side of the moon.
Alone with only the base's vigilant computer Gerty as his sole companion, Bell's extended isolation has taken its toll. His only link to the outside world comes from satellite messages from his wife and young daughter.
He longs to return home, but a terrible accident on the lunar surface leads to a disturbing discovery that contributes to his growing sense of paranoia and dislocation so many miles away from home.
