MAN ON A LEDGE

Tue, 13 May 2014 | Review by: Micky B

Even while watching it for the first time, one cannot help asking the question as to why all action thrillers can't be as good as this one! It starts on a high note...and yet gets still better and better as it goes along. At the beginning, its not too clear whether Nick Cassidy (Sam Worthington) has just escaped from jail, or whether he was released before having served his full term...but he arrives at New York's prestigious Roosevelt Hotel, where he books in under the false name of Walker. From his room on the 21st floor, he climbs out of the window and onto the narrow ledge outside. This attracts quite a crowd in the road below, with everyone anticipating his imminently committing suicide! The police are called, and Jack Dougherty (Edward Burns) tries to talk with Nick. However, Nick will only speak to negotiator Lydia Mercer (Elizabeth Banks), who is on a leave of absence, after failing to save a suicidal policeman. But who really is Nick Cassidy? Why is he on the ledge...and – more importantly –. what is happening elsewhere in the city while a good many New Yorkers are gaping at him on the ledge? This is one great picture – a must see in my books...and there's an interesting appearance of that always-reliable supporting actor Ed Harris, who is given sufficient screen time here to justify his deserved popularity – even as a bad guy! And all the loose ends are neatly tied up at the end, so nobody in the audience can complain about detail.
