The mood and tone of this movie may undeniably remind one of Walt Disney efforts, but in fact, this movie actually "out-Disney's" them. The invoked feelings of joy, love and family bonding, are all brought together with heartwarming sincerity. And the fact that it's a true story only adds to the appreciation, and helps to remind us that there ARE good people out there.

Leigh Anne Tuohy spots a homeless African-American teen, Michael Oher, along the side of the road, and realizing he attends the same school as her daughter, she decides to take him in. At first, this good deed makes almost everyone in the house awkward around each other, even Michael. But as time progresses, bonds are formed and relationships are strengthened. The Touhys, most notably Leigh Anne, also help to propel Michael to follow a career in Gridiron football, and this is where he really starts to succeed.

That plot is a simple one, but sometimes the best and most believable stories ARE the simplest ones to be told. But rest assured, there are quite a few tense moments in the second half of the movie. Michael is also running away from a past that includes his mother deserting him, and this leads to a search by Leigh Anne to try and unravel exactly what happened there. And there are also people who don't quite approve of Michael's new-found happiness with the Tuohys, like Leigh Anne's friends, Michael's former ghetto-area neighbours, as well as the College Football Association - who start poking around and throwing some interesting theories into the mix.

The acting is faultless, with Sandra Bullock winning a much-deserved Acamedy Award for her brilliant performance as the tough, Memphis-born Leigh Anne. She gets able-bodied support from Country singer Tim McGraw as her husband, and newcomer Quinton Aaron as Michael (who gives a very subdued performance reminding one of the term "gentle giant"). This entertainingly rousing pic will definitely have you believing in the "good that man can do" for one another, and is truly one to be enjoyed by the whole family. (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)

Teenager Michael Oher is surviving on his own, virtually homeless, when he is spotted on the street by Leigh Anne Tuohy.

Learning that the young man is one of her daughter's classmates, Leigh Anne insists that Michael - wearing shorts and a t-shirt in the dead of winter - come out of the cold. Without a moment's hesitation, she invites him to stay at the Tuohy home for the night.

But what starts out as a gesture of kindness turns into something more, as Michael becomes part of the Tuohy family despite the differences in their backgrounds.

Academy Award-winner for Best Actress.
