The Proposal (DVD)

While it may not be the funniest comedy of the year, The Proposal still manages to be loads of fun, thanks to the witty chemistry between Bullock and Reynolds. The plot might follow all the cliched checkpoints, but the heart and warmth which accompanies you on the journey makes it all worthwhile.

Bullock plays a driven yet feared publishing editor and Reynolds plays her executive assistant (ie. slave), When she gets told that due to her Canadian status, she will be deported because her visa has expired, she comes up with a plan to convince the authorites that she and her "assistant" have actually fallen in love and plan to marry, thereby ensuring that she can remain in the U.S. But convincing his family is going to take some doing and that's where the majority of the movie, and comedy, takes place.

You kind of know how it's all going to play out, but there are still a few spanners thrown into the works, so you'll never be totally certain that you have the plot figured out. And the supporting cast, including Betty White; Craig T. Nelson and Mary Steenburgen, are all in fine form. And may I just add, Bullock has never looked more gorgeous! A perfect date movie. When high-powered book editor Margaret faces deportation to her native Canada, the quick-thinking exec declares that she's actually engaged to her unsuspecting put-upon assistant Andrew, who she's tormented for years. He agrees to participate in the charade, but with a few conditions of his own.

The unlikely couple heads to Alaska to meet his quirky family and the always-in-control city girl finds herself in one comedic fish-out-of-water situation after another.

With an impromptu wedding in the works and an immigration official on their tails, Margaret and Andrew reluctantly vow to stick to the plan despite the precarious consequences.
