You Only Live Twice

Fri, 12 Apr 2013 | Review by: Micky B

Shot mainly in Japan and Spain: the film starts with 007 feigning his own death. SPECTRE willingly buys into this deception – which allows Bond (Sean Connery) a little more freedom of movement as he is covertly sent to Tokyo after both American and Russian manned spacecraft disappear in orbit. With both of these nations blaming the other for these happenings, Bond has to investigate...and to prevent the Cold War from escalating. Going undercover, he has his hair trimmed oriental-style, and swaps his more customary Western-style for Japanese clothing, and undertakes a rigorous Ninja training course. For the fist time, Bond comes face to face with Stavro Blofield (a superb performance from Canadian actor Donald Plesance) who is the head of SPECTRE. From a lead given to him by Kissy Suzuki (Mi Hama) – a loyal Japanese diving girl, they discover cave and the volcano above it. Establishing that the mouth of the volcano is a disguised hatch to a secret rocket base, Bond slips in through the crater door, while Kissy returns to alert the necessary authorities. While the first half of the film is more conventional Bond fare, the second half goes into overdrive with gadgets and largely pyrotechnic special effects. But its all wonderfully entertaining...so who cares whether its far-fetched or not?
